Year 9 Options (Choosing your GCSEs etc.)

Introduction 

Visit Choosing which Subjects to Study in Years 10 & 11 to find out how many subjects you need to take, how to decide and how to fill in the form.

To help you with your selection, the subjects are divided into learning areas (e.g. sciences / languages)

You should aim to include subjects from more than one section in your selection.

 

Scientific Subjects

Astronomy  Environmental Science Geology
Triple Science  Core Science Applied Science

All students must take either Triple Science, Core Science, Applied Science or Fast Track Science. Other science courses are optional.

(A small number of students have already been selected for 'Fast Track' Science at the end of Year 8. These students are already part way through a course leading to GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry & Physics.)

 

Vocational Subjects

These subjects aim to provide you with the skills needed for working in related careers. (Some subjects also appear within learning areas). Students who learn best from practical, real life activities may enjoy these subjects.

Beauty Therapy Building Crafts
Business & Communication Catering Child Development
Hair & Beauty (Foundation) Hair & Beauty (Higher) Health & Social Care
Applied History IT : Foundation Diploma IT : Higher Diploma
Physical Education (BTEC)    
 

Humanities & Social Science Subjects

Citizenship Geography History Applied History
Philosophy & Ethics Psychology Sociology  Media Studies

It is recommended that most students study at least one of these subjects as part of a broad education. All students will also study a short course in Ethics, leading to 1/2 a GCSE. 

 

Arts, PE & Technology Subjects

Art & Design (BTEC) Dance Drama Graphic Products
Music Photography Physical Education (GCSE) Physical Education (BTEC)
Resistant Materials   Textiles Technology  

It is recommended that most students study at least one of these subjects as part of a broad education.

 

Languages Subjects

Modern Languages (Students may study French, German or Spanish)

ICT & Business Subjects

Business Studies Business & Communication ICT (GCSE)
IT- Foundation Diploma IT - Higher Diploma Statistics

These subjects include a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical activities and experience

 

Compulsory Subjects

All students MUST study the following subjects. Course details are included for information but these subjects do not need to be included on the options sheet as students will be allocated lessons automatically.

English Ethics (Short Course) Mathematics

Students also have lessons in PE & PSHCE each week to help them remain fit and healthy.
