The Referral System

This is an effective means of communication between teachers, tutors, Heads of Faculty and Heads of Year to highlight problems with pupil behaviour and pink referral forms should be written out on every occasion and passed on to Tutors. Tutors are then able to build up a profile on pupils and when appropriate pass this on to Heads of Year for further action. Full details regarding the referral form and system can be found in the staff Rewards and Sanctions booklet.

The Responsibility of the Tutor

  •      To monitor attendance, punctuality and lateness and promote an orderly start to the day.

         To check uniform and equipment.

To reinforce the use of school organiser and check that it is being used appropriately.

         To monitor rewards.

To keep an overview of detentions, behaviour, reports and files.

To alert the Head of Year to any problems.

The Responsibility of Subject Teachers and Heads of Faculty

  •      To check punctuality to lessons.

All staff should be vigilant to inappropriate behaviour and take immediate action.

To set the tone for an orderly lesson.

To alert the Tutor of Head of Year to any unexplained absence.

To ensure expected behaviour is maintained.

Inform, in writing to the tutor (using a student referral form), any behaviour problems.

To issue detentions where appropriate (see detention system for further information).

Pass on to Heads of Faculty subject specific problems, e.g. poor behaviour in class, lack of homework, damage to equipment, lack of effort, lateness. Heads of Faculty will then give support to the classroom teacher by issuing appropriate faculty sanctions.

The Role of the Head of Year

  •       Tutors will alert the Head of Year to any pupils who need further support and/or sanction in meeting behaviour expectations, e.g.
         pupils who are consistently late
persistent poor behaviour, such as bullying, abusive behaviour or conflict situations
         truancy

Head of Year will deal with problems of this nature and liaise with parents or Learning Support or other outside agencies.

To place pupils on an appropriate report system to monitor any problems and give necessary support (refer to Rewards and Sanctions booklet).

Heads of Year may issue a fixed internal exclusion or a fixed external exclusion where appropriate.

Where difficulties persist and go beyond this stage, the Head Teacher will become involved.

The Role of the Headteacher

  • The Headteacher will be kept informed of any pupils displaying serious behaviour problems. The Headteacher may issue fixed term or permanent exclusions as he feels is appropriate.
